Colossus Project

Colossus Project

Here is a project I have recently completed

It is a small playable level, or more accurately a "boss arena".  This map comes complete with a custom playable character, and a boss fight with a colossal stone creature.

Everything you see being hand drawn or modeled & sculpted by myself, using 3DS Max, UDK, Zbrush, Photoshop, nDo2, 3D Coat, and Substance Painter.

I aimed for a whimsical and cartoon-like feel.  Below is a "Teaser" video I made to demonstrate the project.

Design Process

Reference is very important for inspiration, art direction, and just general comparison.  I made a few libraries online using Pinterest; FMP generalEnvironment, and rocks/formations.

I spent some time refining ideas before I started creating stuff in 3D.  The colossus was ultimately the hardest to settle on - A lot of how the level functioned as a whole was dependent on this.  I stuck with something simple though - A hulking top-heavy colossus throwing its weight around.

Personally I think I have some far more interesting colossus designs - with cool shapes and demonic forms, but these don't seem to have the "charm" of my final design, or suit the feel as much.  For the architecture and landscape the design is simpler - just trying to create variety between assets and finalizing.

I did some kit-bashing, trying to develop the ideas further in 3D.  I'm not going to post everything as there is a lot - This guy below was the second in line for this project - quite similar in character to my final colossus, but too humanoid.

Mood Images
I guess quite important and easily overlooked is the mood - how it feels and the general atmosphere.  For this I did quick sketches/paints of a colossus in situe.  The fog, or atmospheric depth makes a huge difference - Yet I want to be able to get close to it and see bits - quite a challenge.
